Absence & Sickness
When you cannot attend a shift, the way you report it matters. Our clients depend on consistent, reliable care — and your manager needs time to arrange safe cover. Follow the steps below every time.
Reporting Absence — The Rules
Return to Work
After any period of absence, you will have a return-to-work conversation with your manager. This is not a disciplinary meeting — it is a chance to check you are well enough to return, discuss any adjustments needed, and ensure you feel supported coming back into your role.
Statutory Sick Pay (SSP)
SSP is paid where you meet the eligibility criteria. Details of current SSP rates and qualifying conditions will be provided by your manager or payroll. If you are unsure whether you qualify, ask.
Appointments
Wherever possible, schedule medical and dental appointments in your own time or outside of shift hours. If this is not possible, speak to your manager in advance to arrange cover.
Other Types of Absence
- Time off for dependants — emergency situations involving someone who depends on you
- Compassionate leave — at management discretion in cases of serious illness or bereavement
- Bereavement leave — granted on a case-by-case basis; speak to your manager
- Jury service — you are entitled to time off; notify your manager as soon as you receive the summons
- Religious observance — we will accommodate requests where reasonably practicable; discuss with your manager in advance
