Moving & Handling

Safe moving and handling protects you and the people you care for. Every transfer must be assessed, planned, and carried out using the correct technique and equipment. There are no shortcuts — manual lifting is never acceptable.

TILE Assessment

  • Task — What does the transfer involve? Consider the movement, distance, posture, and duration required
  • Individual — Who is involved? Consider the abilities, limitations, and condition of both the client and the carer
  • Load — What or who is being moved? Consider the weight, size, stability, and any attachments such as catheters or lines
  • Environment — Where is the transfer taking place? Consider space, flooring, lighting, temperature, and any obstacles

The Moving and Handling Process

1

Assess — Complete a TILE assessment before every transfer. Never assume conditions are the same as last time

2

Plan — Decide the safest method, select the correct equipment, and communicate the plan clearly to everyone involved

3

Execute — Carry out the transfer using correct technique, maintaining communication with the client throughout

4

Review — After the transfer, check the client is comfortable and safe. Report any issues, near misses, or equipment faults

Key Principles

Never Take Risks

If equipment is faulty, missing, or you are unsure about the correct transfer method, do not proceed. Contact your manager immediately. Your safety and the client's safety are always the priority. No one will criticise you for stopping to ask.
