Health & Safety
First Choice Healthcare is committed to providing a safe environment for everyone. The company complies with all relevant health and safety legislation and expects every member of staff to do the same.
Your Health & Safety Responsibilities
Hazard Awareness
You work in other people's homes, which means the environment can change from visit to visit. Stay alert for hazards such as wet floors, trailing cables, cluttered walkways, faulty equipment, unsecured rugs, and poor lighting. If you identify a hazard, take reasonable steps to make it safe and report it to your manager.
Manual Handling
- Never manually lift a client — always use the equipment specified in the care plan
- Check all moving and handling equipment before use and report faults immediately
- Follow the techniques taught in your moving and handling training
- If you are unsure about any aspect of a move, do not proceed — contact your manager
- Two carers must be present for all double-up care calls as documented in the care plan
COSHH — Control of Substances Hazardous to Health
Be aware of any hazardous substances in the client's home, including cleaning products and medications. Never mix cleaning chemicals. Always follow product instructions. Wear appropriate PPE when handling hazardous substances. Report any spills or exposure incidents to your manager.
Fire Safety
In an Emergency
In any emergency situation, call 999 first. Your immediate priority is the safety of the client and yourself. Once the situation is safe, contact your manager as soon as possible. Report all accidents, incidents, and near-misses — no matter how minor they seem.
