Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking
First Choice Healthcare operates a zero tolerance policy on alcohol, drugs, and smoking during working hours. There are no exceptions.
Zero Tolerance Policy
You must not consume alcohol, use illegal drugs, or misuse prescription or over-the-counter medication during working hours, including all breaks. You must not be under the influence of any such substance while on duty. This applies from the moment your shift begins until it ends.
Consequences
Being under the influence of alcohol or drugs while on duty constitutes gross misconduct. This will result in immediate suspension and may lead to summary dismissal without notice. The safety of the people we support depends on you being fully alert, capable, and in control at all times.
Prescription Medication
If you are taking prescription medication that may affect your ability to work safely — including drowsiness, impaired judgment, or reduced reaction times — you must inform your manager before starting your shift. Your manager will assess whether it is safe for you to carry out your duties.
Smoking and Vaping Rules
Support Available
If you are struggling with alcohol, drug, or substance dependency, we encourage you to speak to your manager in confidence. We will support you in accessing help where possible. However, this does not exempt you from the zero tolerance policy while on duty.
